What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most recognized minimally invasive aesthetic treatment in the world. Approved for use in 98 countries, BOTOX® has become the #1 selling treatment of its kind. The difference for many is subtle yet impactful. BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA approved for treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines and crow’s feet lines in adults.

Slate Medspa is the premier BOTOX® Cosmetic provider in NJ. What sets us apart? We use an artistic approach combined with the most advanced techniques to provide natural looking results. What Is the difference between BOTOX, XEOMIN, DYSPORT and JEUVEAU?

Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau all contain the same active ingredient: botulinum toxin type A.

In 2002, the FDA approved the use of BOTOX Cosmetic to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe frown lines. It ushered in a new era for medical aesthetics. The second neurotoxin that was approved for the same purpose was Dysport, in 2009, followed by Xeomin, in 2011, and Jeuveau in 2019. Studies have shown that all 4 brands work on reducing wrinkles.

Speed of Onset: Patients can feel the effects of Dysport as soon as 1 -2 days, while BOTOX and Jeuveau starts working in 2-3 days. Xeomin starts working in 1-3 days, but has a more gradual onset. Patients feel the effects of Xeomin come on more gently. All 4 brands reach their maximal effects in 2-3 weeks. Generally, neurotoxins work faster in women than in men. Many of our patients at Slate Medspa prefer Xeomin beacause the onset is more gradual.

Botulinum Resistance: Some patients develop a resistance to neurotoxin treatments after prolonged use. When someone becomes resistant to Botulinum, the effects of the treatment as well as the duration it lasts become reduced. Resistance is a result of the production of antibodies against the Botulinum toxin molecule. The risk of developing antibodies to Botulinum increases with the amount of complexing proteins – these are found in BOTOX, Dysport, and Jeuveau, but not Xeomin. BOTOX, Dysport, and Jeuveau are bound to complexing proteins. Xeomin, on the other hand, is unique in that during their manufacturing process, the complexing proteins are removed to produce a “purer” form of Botulinum.

Duration of Effectiveness: There is no clear proof of which brand of toxin lasts the longest. Most will agree that BOTOX, DYSPORT, XEOMIN, and JEUVEAU all last between 3- 6 months. Many studies have shown some brands last longer than others, while several studies disagree. Many studies have found that all 4 brands have a similar duration. The scientific consensus is that there is no significant difference in duration of action.

ASK FOR BOTOX, XEOMIN, DYSPORT and JEUVEAU BY NAME

Only BOTOX, DYSPORT, XEOMIN, and JEUVEAU have been evaluated and approved by the FDA. Be wary of discount providers or “cheap botox”. These may be unregulated imported products or diluted formula. Make sure you receive authentic products by taking a few simple steps.

  • Ask to see the vial that the specialist will use during your treatment. The vial will have the logo and also have a holographic image. If the vial has another logo or marking, then it is not authentic.
  • See a reputable medical provider like Slate Medspa who purchases directly from each manufacturer. To locate authorized medical providers, use the Find a Specialist tool on the BOTOX , DysportXeomin , or Jeuveau websites.

How does BOTOX® work?

BOTOX targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet—the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, laughing, concentrating and squinting over the years. Your BOTOX specialist will inject these muscles to temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and frown lines between your brows.

BOTOX® FAQ

Is there a substitute or a ‘Generic’ for BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX was the first brand of Botulinum toxin available, but BOTOX is a brand of Botulinum Toxin. Today, besides BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA), the other brands of Botulinum commonly available in USA, Europe and many other parts of the world are DYSPORT (anobotulinumtoxinA), XEOMIN (incobotulinumtoxinA), and JEUVEAU ((prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs).

Only BOTOX, DYSPORT, XEOMIN, and JEUVEAU have been evaluated and approved by the FDA to help make moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines look better in adults. Be wary of discount providers or “cheap botox”. These may be unregulated imported products or diluted formula.

Will my face look overdone or unnatural?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a technique-sensitive treatment. We believe our artistic approach combined with advanced technique is what sets us apart. Our practitioners are licensed, trained, and medical experts in facial anatomy and will provide you with natural looking results. So you’ll look like yourself—only with less noticeable lines. No one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic only for women?

Not at all! Many men make BOTOX® Cosmetic part of what they do to care for their appearance.

The number of men choosing treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic has risen fast – in the past three years alone, men have received over one million botulinum toxin treatments. When surveyed, the majority of men say they want to look good and they’re bothered by the changes they see in the mirror. 80% would choose to treat their crow’s feet first, while 74% would prioritize their forehead lines, and 60% would most like to treat their frown lines.*

What age should I start using BOTOX® Cosmetic?

It’s not your age that determines when BOTOX® Cosmetic is right for you, it’s the severity of your lines. In fact, 64% of practices report seeing a rise in cosmetic surgery or injectable treatments for patients in their early 30’s. The truth is, everyone’s lines form differently. The timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, from cellular changes that may occur over time, to reduction of collagen, to genetic factors, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

How much time does treatment take? Will it hurt?

The actual injection process takes a quick 10 minutes. Your specialist will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you. Some patients report that being injected with BOTOX® Cosmetic feels like a pinch. If you are concerned about discomfort, your specialist may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment.

Treatment requires minimal downtime. So you can return to your daily routine immediately after you leave our office.

Am i eligible for BOTOX®?

Most adults over 18 are eligible for Botox. Do not get Botox if you:

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Botox or to any other botulinum toxin product (Dysport, Xeomin, etc.)
  • Have an infection at the injection site
  • Have a urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Are being treated for urinary incontinence or cannot empty your bladder on your own and aren’t routinely catheterizing
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not known if Botox can harm an unborn baby or pass into breast milk.
  • If you have other conditions, it is best to consult with your doctor before getting Botox.

Can BOTOX®? treat Migranes?

Botox may be best known as a miracle wrinkler-eraser, but since 2010, it’s also been an FDA-approved treatment for those suffering from chronic migraines. Click here for more information about Botox and Migranes.

Can BOTOX®? treat Sweating?

Botox is FDA-approved to treat excessive sweating. When injected in the underarms, palms, or feet, the substance helps deactivate sweat glands in much the same way it hampers muscle contractions. Click here for more information about Botox and Sweating.

Is BOTOX® the same as Botulism?

Contrary to popular belief, the bacteria that causes botulism, clostridium botulinum, is not part of the treatment, nor are six of the seven neurotoxins it secretes. The only substance used in Botox injections, botulinum toxin A, is carefully extracted, purified, and standardized into FDA-approved doses. Plus, the dosage is so small, it can’t get beyond the muscle tissue it’s injected into, meaning there’s little if any chance for Botox to reach the bloodstream.

What are the side effects of BOTOX®?

Mild redness, bruising, and swelling can crop up in the days following a treatment, and more serious complications aren’t unheard of. These complications can be life-threatening, including problems swallowing, speaking, or breathing.
