TELL ME MORE!

Hyperpigmentation is a condition in which patches of skin become darker in color compared to the surrounding skin. It is caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes. There are numerous factors that can cause hyperpigmentation. It is most often the result of sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation or injury to the skin, certain medications, such as birth control pills or antibiotics, genetics, skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or acne, and just plain aging.

In addition to our treatment options for melasma, our skin care professionals will recommend a skin care plan that may include topical creams such as hydroquinone, retinols, antioxidants and brightening serums to help lighten the dark patches of melasma. Hydroquinone is a skin-lightening agent that works by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin. Retinol is a form of vitamin A that helps to exfoliate the skin and increase cell turnover. Antioxidants include vitamin C and E, and provides sun damage protection through cellular regeneration & anti-oxidant properties. Brightening serums contain a unique blend of ingredients such as tranexamic acid, peptides and niacinamide can help to improve the overall appearance of pigmented skin. It is also important to protect the skin from further sun damage, which can exacerbate melasma. This can be done by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wearing protective clothing, and limiting sun exposure during peak hours.
