TELL ME MORE!

Melasma is a common skin problem that causes brown patches on the face, most commonly appearing on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip. It also can appear on other parts of the body that get lots of sun.  The most common triggers for melasma are hormone changes and sun exposure. Individuals of Latin or Asian ethnicity are more likely to get melasma. And although melasma may affect both men and women, the majority of those affected are women. This is because melasma is often a result of hormonal changes and women are more susceptible to this hormonal pigmentation than men. Women who are taking birth control pills or undergoing hormone replacement therapy are also prone to melasma. This condition can result in loss of confidence and impact an individual’s self-esteem. Thankfully, there are a number of treatment options available at Slate Medspa.

In addition to our treatment options for melasma, our skin care professionals will recommend a skin care plan that may include topical creams such as hydroquinone, retinols and brightening serums to help lighten the dark patches of melasma. Hydroquinone is a skin-lightening agent that works by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin. Retinol is a form of vitamin A that helps to exfoliate the skin and increase cell turnover. Brightening serums contain a unique blend of ingredients such as tranexamic acid, peptides and niacinamide can help to improve the overall appearance of pigmented skin. It is also important to protect the skin from further sun damage, which can exacerbate melasma. This can be done by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wearing protective clothing, and limiting sun exposure during peak hours.
