Laser skin resurfacing has been used in aesthetic for skin rejuvenation for over 20 years. Today, CO2 laser resurfacing is still considered the most effective modality for skin rejuvenation, but it is associated with significant downtime and a high risk of complications. In addition, it cannot be used for treatments outside of the face. Fractionated laser resurfacing, which was subsequently developed over a decade ago, was associated with faster recovery and fewer complications than fully ablative laser.
Fractional RF microneedling is the most promising new technology for aesthetic treatments, combining two methods previously used individually for skin rejuvenation into a more clinically effective procedure. This new treatment can offer similar results to ablative laser methods, but with significantly less discomfort and downtime. It has shown great improvement in skin tightening, fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, acne and acne scars, both on and off the face. - IT’S SAFE FOR ALL SKIN TYPES
While older RF devices were mostly ineffective, fractional RF Microneedling uses the technology to its full potential by bypassing the epidermis before delivering the RF energy, allowing for the delivery of powerful and intense heat into the deeper layers of skin, causing tens of thousands of fractional electrocoagulation zones in the dermis which facilitates a natural wound healing process. This technology works differently than laser, as it uses tissue resistance within various layers of the skin to transform RF energy into thermal energy. This then causes collagen contraction and stimulates new collagen production. The advantage to RF over laser is that it should be safe for all skin types since no light is emitted into the skin to stimulate melanin directly.

The limitation of fractional lasers for treating acne and acne scarring has been the risk of hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker Fitzpatrick skin types. RF energy is not specifically absorbed by melanin like that of a light laser, which decreases the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The energy is delivered by insulated needles at precise depths, further reducing risk at the top layer of skin. This makes fractionated RF an attractive alternative modality for treating acne scarring.

Both RF microneedling and fractional lasers have been shown to stimulate collagen production which will help decrease wrinkling and help tighten the skin, but RF produces precise heat which has the added advantage of increasing elastin density which can aid in more dramatic skin tightening.
- IT CAN BE USED ON THE NECK & BODY
A major advantage of RF microneedling over ablative laser resurfacing is that by adjusting needle depth and energy levels, it can be done in areas other than the face. Many clinical studies have shown effective results from fractional RF microneedling in the treatment of mild to moderate laxity of the lower face, neck and body. Laser resurfacing is not indicated for the neck and body due to the risk of scarring in non-facial tissue.
